Anne Wojcicki (23andMe)

Who is Anne Wojcicki?

Anne Wojcicki was born in Palo Alto, California and grew up in a family with a strong academic background. Her mother, an educator, and her father, a professor (Head of Physics) at Stanford University, influenced all their children to be entrepreneurial and pushed them to follow their passion. One of her sisters became the CEO of YouTube.

Anne Wojcicki studied biology at Yale University. During her time there, she became interested in genetics and healthcare. After graduating, she started her career in finance, focused on healthcare investments. She worked in a series of hedge funds after that.

What Inspired Anne Wajcicki To Start 23andMe?

Working in healthcare finance exposed Wojcicki to the complexities and inefficiencies of the healthcare system, particularly around insurance and patient access to their own health information.

She wanted to do something about the issue and wanted to empower people with their health data.

The idea for 23andMe took root as she saw an opportunity to combine personal health insights with cutting-edge genetic science. The company’s mission was to give people access to their genetic information so they could make more informed decisions about their health. With this vision, Wojcicki co-founded 23andMe with Linda Avey and Paul Cusenza in 2006, naming it after the 23 pairs of chromosomes in human DNA.

Founding 23andMe

Anne Wojcicki and her team launched 23andMe with a revolutionary product: a DNA testing kit that could be used at home. Customers would receive a kit, provide a saliva sample, and mail it back to the company for analysis. The results, delivered via an online portal, offered insights into genetic ancestry, health risks and inherited traits. This direct-to-consumer model was groundbreaking in the field of genetics.

Early funding came from various venture capital sources, including Wojcicki’s former colleagues in finance and Silicon Valley investors. Time magazine named 23andMe’s testing kit “Invention of the Year.”

Scaling The Company

By 2015, 23andMe was generating millions in revenue, with Wojcicki’s personal wealth growing alongside the company’s success.

In 2021, the company went public via a SPAC merger, which further boosted its valuation ($6B). However, the company stock has since been in constant decline because of the decreasing sales and increasing losses.
